American voters nearly always elect a president who responds to the flaws they have found in his predecessor. President George W. Bush was viewed as being morally upright in his personal life when compared to the shortcoming of former President Clinton. Whether most voters pull the lever for John McCain or for Barack Obama, they’re likely to select the person that is viewed as more competent than President Bush. Mr. Obama and Mr. McCain have responded by centering their respective campaigns on respect and readiness to lead. The Democrats and Republicans realize that American politics have become as polarized as at any point in the past century and have responded by becoming more grass roots in their message.
